Dental care for babies: How do I do it right?

Category: Dental care
Proper oral and dental care begins in the first few months of life - even before the first tooth appears. Good oral hygiene habits lay the foundation for healthy teeth and are crucial for preventing dental problems from an early age. Here you can find out how to take care of your baby's teeth right from the start.

Overview

Why dental care is important right from the start

It is often assumed that dental care for babies only becomes relevant once the first teeth are visible. However, the gums and oral cavity should be cared for from an early age in order to create a healthy foundation. Important habits are formed in the first few years of life in particular. With a good dental care routine, you can teach your child a positive attitude towards oral hygiene from an early age. Regular care can effectively prevent tooth decay and other dental diseases and ensures healthy growth of the jaw and teeth.

Prevent tooth decay

Your baby’s milk teeth form the basis for the permanent teeth. And that means that caring for milk teeth is particularly important. Because even if milk teeth are only temporary, tooth decay and tooth damage can endanger the permanent teeth and damage the gums. To prevent tooth decay, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • If possible, clean your baby’s teeth twice a day or after sugary meals.
  • Try to avoid sugary and acidic foods and offer your child plenty of water to rinse out any leftover food.
  • Also make sure you get enough fluoride. Fluroird strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent tooth decay. Talk to your pediatrician for the best fluoride supply.

Oral and dental care for babies

Your baby’s oral and dental care changes over the first months and years. Here are some tips on how you can adapt care to your baby’s needs:

From birth: Even before the first teeth erupt, you can gently massage your baby’s gums. Our Oral Care Finger is ideal for this: the antibacterial finger cot gently massages the gums and ensures that no plaque builds up in the mouth. The soft material is particularly gentle and adapts perfectly to your finger so that you can massage and clean without any risk.

Your baby starts teething: With the silicone finger ring from our Oral Care Set, you can remove plaque particularly gently while continuing to massage the gums. This gentle massage can have a soothing effect and relieve pain, especially when teething.

From the first tooth: As soon as the first teeth appear, you can start with gentle cleaning. You can brush with a finger toothbrush and later with a soft children’s toothbrush. In combination with our children’s tooth gel, which contains no fluoride or artificial flavors, you can be sure that dental care is gentle but thorough. Apply a lentil-sized amount of tooth gel to the (finger) toothbrush and gently clean your child’s teeth and gums in the morning and evening. Our Toothbrush Starter Set also includes a tongue scraper. If your dental care routine allows it, you can gently clean your baby’s tongue with the scraper. This removes plaque, reduces germs and bacteria on the tongue and can also protect against tooth decay.

When can my child start brushing their teeth on their own?

From 2-3 years: Your child can start learning to brush their teeth independently at around 2-3 years old. This is when children want to try out lots of things for themselves. Our brushing trainer helps with this. The protective ring prevents the brush from getting too far into the mouth and the soft rubber strips massage the gums. This allows your child to practise brushing safely. Even children who often refuse to brush their teeth can be motivated with the brushing trainer.

However, parents are still responsible for proper dental care for a while. You should brush your child’s teeth until they are around 7-8 years old. Only then are children’s motor skills sufficiently developed for them to brush their teeth thoroughly themselves.

Brush your teeth properly with the COI method

It all depends on the right method

The COI method is recommended to ensure that your child’s teeth are always brushed properly.

C

The first step is to clean the chewing surfaces. Short back and forth movements ensure that the chewing surfaces are nice and clean.

O

Then the outer surfaces come next. The teeth lie on top of each other. Brush the front of the teeth with gentle, circular movements.

I

Last up are the inner surfaces. Brush from red to white, i.e. from the gums to the teeth.

With these three steps, you can ensure that you always brush your child’s teeth thoroughly. If your child is already brushing their own teeth, you should brush them according to this system at least until they reach school age.
